 Itsukusima Shinto Shrine locates on the north side of the island. The shrine has its origin in 6th century. Kiyomori Taira, top aristocrat at that time, built it on the sea in 1168. The Shrine was a great monumental work of Taira family. Architekture is typycal palace style of 10th cen. It was destroyed twice by typoon in recent a few years.
Its amazing that the shrine has been being restored by expensive repair works many times in the long history.
Oh-torii
The 8th gate since 12th Cen.
Completed in 1875. Total height is 16m. the circumference of main pilar is 9.9m. It locates 160m north from the shrine main building.

Main buildings of shrine
In 1189, just 17 years after the construction, Taira Family was defeated by Minamoto Family at the sea battle on the Seto Inland Sea.
But Yoritomo Minamoto, the first Shogun, did donation in 1189.


 5 strory Buddhism Pagoda seems a part of the Shrine. It shows complicate history of the Shrine.
